Joint Statement on Ted Gatsas’s Dismissive Comments About Ride-Alongs with Manchester First Responders

Manchester, NH – During Monday morning’s debate on WGIR/iHeart Radio with Jack Heath, Mayor Ted Gatsas asserted that he does not need to accompany police or fire officials on ride-alongs because he watches the television show “Drugs, Inc.”. He was further condescending towards Manchester police officers when he stated it wouldn’t be productive to be “laughing and joking” with officers on ride-alongs.

Today, Ken Chamberlain, President of the Manchester Police Patrolman’s Association, and Joyce Craig released the following statements:

“It is insulting that Mayor Gatsas chooses to watch the television show ‘Drugs, Inc.’ over going on ride-alongs with Manchester police officers to see the challenges we face here every day,” said Ken Chamberlain, President of the Manchester Police Patrolman’s Association. “If Mayor Gatsas had ever been on a ride-along, he would know they aren’t about “laughing and joking” with officers, they are about showing our city officials the reality of our fight against the opioid crisis and efforts to reduce crime to help make informed decisions about policies. It will be a welcome change to have a Mayor who is committed to listening to police officers who serve our community, which is one of the many reasons we are supporting Joyce Craig for Mayor.”

“Ride-alongs have been one of the most valuable and influential experiences I’ve had as an elected official and candidate,” said Joyce Craig. “You see first-hand what our public safety officials are encountering and what we’re facing as a community. As mayor, I will continue regular ride-alongs with the police and fire departments to inform decisions we make to combat the opioid crisis and lower crime.”

Background:

Joyce Craig has been on four police and fire ride-alongs during the campaign, which helped inform her ‘Safe Streets, Opioid Crisis, and Recovery Services’ plan that she released today. As mayor, Joyce will continue regular ride-alongs with the police and fire departments to see the challenges our community faces first-hand. Joyce wrote about her ride along with police in September that can be found here.
