MANCHESTER, NH – Today, in response to the Board of Mayor and Alderman’s budget meeting, Joyce Craig, candidate for Mayor of Manchester, released the following statement:
“Under Mayor Ted Gatsas, last night’s contentious and combative budget meeting was just business as usual at City Hall. For eight years, Ted Gatsas has let our city stumble from crisis to crisis while failing to offer solutions to Manchester’s most pressing challenges.
Ted Gatsas talks an awful lot about taxpayers, but the fact is that his administration has a record of poor financial planning and management resulting in disastrous results for taxpayers.
Mayor Gatsas has continually cost Manchester taxpayers money, while attempting to shift blame to others. During his eight years in office, Mayor Gatsas lost over $15 million in non-taxpayer funds for the school district, defeated the solar array project that would have generated revenue for the city, sold valuable city property to connected developers without business plans, and rejected a federal grant to fund firefighter positions.
The result of Mayor Gatsas’ fiscal mismanagement is a budget that overrides the tax-cap to adequately fund our schools. Mayor Gatsas has no one to blame but himself for the tax-cap override.
Manchester needs a plan for economic growth that expands our tax base and lowers our tax rate. To attract businesses and employees to Manchester we need good schools, safe streets, and positive developments. We can’t let Mayor Gatsas’ lack of vision and planning hurt taxpayers and hold Manchester back.”
